The Port & Contour Revolution
The shift from iPhone 14 Pro to 15 Pro eliminated the 11-year-old Lightning port in favor of USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps with 4K60 ProRes external SSD recording). Simultaneously, stainless steel sharp 90° edges were replaced with contoured Grade 5 Titanium, rendering all 14 Pro cases and docks completely incompatible.
Camera Control & Chassis Expansion
iPhone 16 Pro expanded display diagonal to 6.3-inch and introduced the sapphire capacitive Camera Control button on the lower right flank. Case makers could no longer use solid perimeter bumpers; cases required either recessed tactile open cutouts or custom sapphire conductive bridges. Wireless charging bumped from 15W to 25W MagSafe.

iPhone 17 Pro abandoned the corner square camera island for a full-width aluminum visor shelf, rebalancing the phone flat on tables. RAM leaped from 8GB to 12GB to host localized 13B LLMs with zero latency. The revolutionary 5.6mm iPhone Air introduced an ultra-compact single-cell chassis.
2nm Substrate & Variable Aperture Optics
iPhone 18 Pro deployed TSMC 2nm GAAFET silicon and mechanical motorized aperture leaves (f/1.4 to f/4.0), demanding a deeper 4.8mm plateau bezel. Charging hit 45W via USB-PD 3.1 and Qi2.2. The companion iPhone Duo introduced dual-panel book folding with a flexible OLED and a continuous hinge bumper.
